Steiger 1700 serial 107
Steiger 1700 serial number 107 was originally sold to Peter Kieffer. Peter purchased the 1700 with 23.1x26 Logger tires
to be used for industrial work
Peter used the 1700 for pulling large scrapers until 1968-69 when he sold it to his brother.
Leo Kieffer who used the 1700 for pulling a large cultivator and an 8-bottom plow. One of his workers was running the 1700 at night and it threw the fan belts and ended up cooking the engine. After that it smoked badly from one side. Leo pulled the engine and repowered it with a 237 Mack engine from a wrecked new truck. He also replaced the transmission with a 905 Fuller. He added a pleasure fit oil cooler to the drop box to keep it from overheating. The 1700 still ran the Clark axels and it went through several rings and pinions. With the 6-1 reduction the pinions were the weak link.
Norman Pross and his brother Harold came over to Leo’s to check out the 1700 and take it for a test drive. When Norman fired it up he said Now that’s an engine!! And he bought it on the spot. When Norman past away, his nephew and brother Harold kept the 1700. As of February, 24 2018 the 1700 is still in their possession.
